Updated on January 22, 2009

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)

With the increased use of computers, human visual system has led to series of visual symptoms called “Computer Vision Syndrome”.

What is CVS?

Computer Vision Syndrome is the complexity of eye and problems in vision experienced by the computer users.

Continuous exposure to computer monitor results in vision problems. Visual symptoms can mostly be resolved with the proper management of environment and proper eye care for the computer users.

Following are the common symptoms faced by computer users:

  • Eye tiredness
  • Eye irritation
  • Eye strain
  • Blurred vision
  • Headache
  • Neck and Back ache
  • Double vision

Above are the symptoms of CVS and if you face any of the above mentioned problems then you may suffer from CVS. DO NOT let your eyes go worse with increased power, consult your eye doctor and get his/her advice.

Following are important instructions used to prevent Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS):

Blink your eyes

Blink count of eyes is 15 per minute. Normally we, computer users while looking at monitor, tend to forget to blink our eyes often (this is due to the concentration on work).

If you don’t blink your eyes in this rate, then eyes become dry and muscles become weaker. While blinking, eyes will get the needed moisture. So, it is very important to blink your eyes at least 15 times a minute.

Suppose you forget to blink your eyes in this rate, and then after every 20 minutes close your eyes completely for 20 seconds (at least) then slowly open your eyes. This will prevent your eyes being restless.

How and where the monitor should be?

Distance: 50 cms should be maintained between your eyes and the monitor.

Location: Centre of monitor should be 8 inches below the eye level.

Illumination: Lower brightness and higher contrast should be set and adjusted according to room lighting so that monitor does not act like a light source. This will avoid eyes being too sensitive to light.

Position: Straight ahead and tilted back 15 degrees.

Light Effect

Avoid light shining directly on your eyes or monitor. Use anti-glare screen. You can use curtains to control the amount of light entering the room.

20-20-20 Rule of eyes

After every 20 minutes of your work take short breaks for 20 seconds by looking at objects those are at least 20 feet away or just by closing your eyes.

Eye Exercise

  • Close your eyes completely and slowly roll your eyeballs clockwise and anti-clockwise. Do it for 10 times.
  • Move your eyes to the right end and then to the left end for 10 times.
  • Move your eyes up and down for 10 times.
  • Take a pencil, hold it 1 feet away. Now, concentrate on the tip of the pencil. Bring it close to your eyes and move it away. Do it for 10 times.

Repeat these exercises 3 times.

Vitamin A helps in keeping your eyes healthy. Following are major sources of Vitamin A:

  • Papaya
  • Carrot
  • Fish
  • Milk
  • Egg

Some useful tips for your eyes

  • To prevent and remove dark circles under eyes:

Cut a potato into thin slices. Take two slices and closing your eyes, keep them on your eyes. This will give a cooling effect to your eyes and remove the dark circles below the eyes. Repeat this daily.

You can also take this treatment with Cucumber slices. This also gives you a best result.
